This design project focuses on the refurbishment of “The Tara,” a riverside restaurant whose name means “River” in Thai. Located along the Chao Phraya River
—Thailand’s most historically and culturally significant waterway—the restaurant takes direct inspiration from its setting on the riverbank.
The entry sequence is designed to stand out from the surrounding buildings. A wall clad in black stone creates a dramatic backdrop, while The Tara’s bold logo provides a striking focal point.
The walkway is conceived as a floating block set upon pristine white gravel, leading guests toward the river’s edge. This gradual, rhythmic approach establishes a contemplative mood,
echoing the reflective quality of water.
The dining area is divided into two main sections. The outdoor dining space is elevated in cascading levels to ensure unobstructed views of the river.
Dark wooden flooring and gravel accents enhance the atmosphere, while slender steel columns frame the open-air zone to create the impression of a room without walls
—both defined and expansive.
The indoor dining space is fully air-conditioned and enclosed with transparent glass and slim aluminum frames to preserve wide views of the river. A dark gray color palette,
minimalist furnishings, and exposed cement beams highlight the building’s original structure, while textured spray-finished walls add depth to the interior.
The restaurant’s design concept draws inspiration from its name, “River.” Behind the bar, glossy black tiles reinterpret the shimmering surface of water, offering a sleek,
abstracted reflection of the river itself. This integration of conceptual and material design elements creates a refined aesthetic—modern yet deeply connected to its setting.
