Rama 5 Market is a traditional market in Nonthaburi that has been in operation for over 17 years, known for its reputation for clean, high quality food.
The owner now aims to modernize the market by reorganizing its layout and rezoning stalls to create a more contemporary experience. Upon inspecting
the project, the designer observed that some of the original stalls had high shelves that obscured visibility, making certain sections feel abandoned and
creating a somewhat lonesome atmosphere. The low opacity walls contributed to a dim, uninviting ambiance. Additionally, the existing roof structure was
low, and the wide, fast paced road in front made the market difficult to spot from afar.
To address these issues, the designer implemented a fresh layout, categorized commodity zones, and standardized stall construction materials for a clean
and cohesive look. Clear primary and secondary pathways were established, with a central main entrance located near the parking lot, leading into an
internal main street that divides the market into two main sections.
The first section includes the non-food area, which, though less frequented, is essential for the market. This area is positioned adjacent to the bustling food
court, creating a flow that naturally draws customers through both spaces. The second section comprises the fresh market area toward the back, attracting
regular, daily shoppers. This spatial division effectively shortens perceived distances, making navigation clearer and more efficient for customers.
The food court, located at the front, serves as the heart of the market and is consistently busy, giving the market a lively, dynamic appearance from the
outside. In the center of the food court, a small garden has been introduced, offering a peaceful gathering area that enhances the dining and shopping
experience. To increase visibility from the outside, the designer raised the building’s height and incorporated vibrant colors. Lightweight steel materials
were selected for their low load impact on the original structure and to add dimension to the building’s design.
Preserving the original antique roof, which cannot be fully replaced, the designer chose to repaint it and selectively install translucent sections to allow
natural light without excessive heat. Key areas, such as the central garden and main pathways, benefit from these adjustments, creating a brighter, more
welcoming atmosphere.
These improvements give the market a fresh, modern appeal while aligning with contemporary lifestyles in terms of aesthetics, cleanliness, and
organization. The updated design is accessible and streamlined, providing a practical yet welcoming experience for all visitors.
